"aufhören"

Ich höre Musik. Aber: Ich höre mit der Arbeit auf? Das ergibt doch keinen Sinn! What would be a relation between "hören" (to hear, to listen) and "aufhören" (to end, to stop)? It is hard to explain, and even Grimms Wörterbuch (for etymology, initiated by the brothers Grimm) has to speculate on this… One plausible explanation goes back to ancient times when humans stopped their work (on the fields, in the woods) and raised their heads to listen to a distant thunder or the growl of a bear. So if you do "aufhören" and listen to the danger approaching, of course you would stop doing whatever you just did. That's actually a (now ancient) meaning "aufhören" still has -- similar to the English to listen up.
